2. Dear Artists

Care is an experience, but not one that totally defines us.

The first workshop of the weekend was all about exploring ourselves and expressing our feelings through clay. Ezra Berrnico led a workshop called 'Dear Artists' where we made letters and sculptures out of clay. They started by reading out a letter they had written called 'The Language of Care Manifesto' which talked about how people don't always understand or talk about what it's like for people who've been in care.

Ezra showed us how we can express ourselves without words. They gave us all a piece of clay and told us to make something or write a letter to someone important to us. It was amazing to see what everyone came up with! Some made really deep and meaningful pieces, while others made abstract shapes that showed how they were feeling.

This workshop created an environment where people had a tactile object in front of them to focus on, alongside other people to chat to and a message to form in the clay, this provided a way for strangers to engage with each other.

We talked about everything from big change in government policy to our own experiences growing up. It was a safe space where we could share and feel comfortable. It was inspiring to see how different everyone's creations were, but how they all came from the same place of expressing ourselves through art.

Why don’t you have a try at making your own clay piece? Imagine moulding clay into shapes that reflect your emotions, memories, and aspirations. Picture crafting a letter to someone special, conveying your deepest thoughts without uttering a single word. This is your chance to let your imagination run wild and transform ordinary clay into a masterpiece that speaks volumes.

Please get in touch with us if you would like some clay.
