5. The Fabric of Democracy

A workshop that effectively shared the power in fabric and clothes as forms of expression.
It was therapeutic to create watercolour squares of messages alongside other people.

Scans of the finished hankerchief designs.

On Sunday, Articulate's Producer Laura Frood hosted a workshop that brought together art and activism. Inspired by the history of using textiles for political messages, this session was all about reflecting on how art impacts our lives.

We learned about how people have used textiles to spread important messages throughout history and traditions like tying knots in handkerchiefs to remember important things.

In the workshop, we each got a textile scarf as a canvas and discussed within our groups what we wanted to write. We were encouraged to share our personal experiences and thoughts on how art can make a big difference to us. Our scarves became vibrant expressions of our individuality and served as a way to send a message to those in power.

We called it 'The Fabric of Democracy' workshop because it showed how art can be a powerful tool for change.
